Wimbledon 2011

The strawberries are ripe, the sun is intermittently shining, Venus Williams is sporting a really freaky new tennis outfit, it must be time for Wimbledon!
So who do you like on the mens' side? Rafa? Roger? Nole? Andy Murray? Someone else?

Roger Federer's Problem

(AFP/Glyn Kirk)
The problem with being Roger Federer is this: every time you go out on the court to play a match, the other guy is bringing his absolute best game. If you're Roger Federer, you cannot have an off day, an off match, an off minute because, since you are the GOAT (Greatest Of All Time), everyone in the tennis universe wants to beat you. For Federer, it might just be a first round match against a relative unknown, but for that relative unknown, it's the biggest match of their life.

And that's what makes champions better than you and me. I have off days, I have days when I can barely get out of bed. I have days when I can't finish the crossword puzzle or remember my boss's name. Roger Federer can't have those days. His mental discipline and mental toughness are his biggest assets.

So bring on Wimbledon, and remember...

US Open Tennis T-shirts

Ah the US Open...tennis, autumn, New York, Jimmy Connors...oops! Jimmy hasn't played for a few years! But when he was a fixture in the tennis world, he owned the Open, even when he didn't win. Americans are always wildly cheered at this most American of tournaments, but my money is on Swiss legend Roger Federer, the most dominant player of the day. Here are some t-shirts you can buy to celebrate this end-of-summer tourney. First up, a couple of my favorite tees from the Official US Open Shop (click on either one to go to the main shop page, where you can choose your favorite):

And a few more generic tennis tees:

Wimbledon T-shirts and Towels

Ah, Wimbledon! Looks like we're headed for another Nadal - Federer final. Yay, it's great watching those two play, they elevate the game to an art form. But I guess we can't count Andy Roddick out yet, either. And on the womens' side...how about Serena Williams? Gutsy gal!!!

Official Wimbledon gear can be found on the official Wimbledon website. The t-shirts are nice, the towels are the real gems. One day I'd love a collection of Wimbledon towels. Of course, these are British items, and you have to pay a pretty pound to have them delivered stateside, so be sure to check shipping costs. And the items themselves aren't cheap - this shirt goes for 23 pounds (about $45).

This official 2007 womens tee is about $49 (exclusive of shipping):

And the towels...

a mere $47...
