President Bush is visiting Israel this week, and his visit highlights an issue that is very sensitive for many Israelis - the ongoing incarceration of convicted spy Jonathan Pollard.
But Israeli Pensioners Minister Rafi Eitan, who recruited Pollard in the 1980's, was asked in an interview Thursday whether he thinks the former U.S. Navy analyst could be released from the prison where he is serving a life sentence via a pardon by President Bush.
"I hope that President Bush will pardon Pollard," Eitan told Israel Radio. "The circumstances have now changed, the circumstances have changed. There is a chance,"
Pollard has served 22 years for passing to Israel classified data about the weapons systems and capabilities of Iraq, Syria and other Arab states, including evidence of Iraq's development of chemical weapons.
