What am I talking about? Apparently, the Agricultural Appropriations Bill, which passed through Congress last week, contained a provision (inserted by "Anonymous" - what the fuck? an anonymous Congress critter can insert a rider into a bill anonymously???) that protects genetically modified seeds from litigation in the face of health risks. President Barack Obama signed the spending bill, including the provision, into law on Tuesday.
According to Michele Simon at Huffington Post: "Without any hearings on the matter, the Senate included language that would require the U.S. Department of Agriculture to essentially ignore any court ruling that would otherwise halt the planting of new genetically-engineered crops." You would do well to read the entire article here. Then do something! The bill has passed, unfortunately, but you can still sign a petition at Food Democracy Now, which demands mandatory labeling of genetically engineered foods. You can also buy local and know where your food is coming from. Get pissed! Do something!
