Happy Norwegian Constitution Day!

Today, May 17, is Norwegian Constitution Day, or Norway's Independence Day. It's a

happy day for Norwegians, the day the Constitution of Norway was signed at Eidsvoll on May 17 in 1814. The constitution declared Norway to be an independent nation (independent from Sweden). If you live (as I do) in a community or city with a large Norwegian population, chances are there will be a children's parade and other festivities. And if you have Norwegian heritage, as more than 4.5 million Americans do, then you have the right to celebrate this day, too! Wear a Norwegian flag tshirt or other apparel in the traditional colors of the country (red, white and blue). In my neighborhood, festivites include a lutefisk eating contest, street dancing in traditional dress, and a herring toss.
